The best way to incorporate homemade milk kefir into your daily life is with a morning smoothie.

Our favorite kefir smoothie recipe is a flavorful, probiotic-rich food, and loved by everyone in our family.

Frozen fruit gives it the consistency of a thin sorbet. My kids just love this smoothie for breakfast!

It’s a great way to sneak in probiotics, especially when they are โ€˜so overโ€™ eating yogurt. My kids always go through phases where they either love yogurt and can’t get enough, or they are totally over it.

So when that happens, I like to switch it up. This smoothie is a great way to get in all those good bacteria for their gut.

Also, it works great when we have a busy morning where we have to be somewhere. We can easily whip this up and enjoy this delicious kefir smoothie.

What is Kefir?

Kefir is a fermented milk drink. It is like a thin yogurt that is slightly sour and is a little fizzy.

It is super simple to make. All you need is milk, kefir grains, and a little time. Check out how to make milk kefir here.

Kefir can also be made dairy-free using alternative milks like almond, coconut, cashew, etc. It can also be made with water. You can learn how to make water kefir here.

Benefits of Kefir

If you are totally new to fermented foods, milk kefir is a fantastic way to begin.

The process is so simple to make that you canโ€™t really mess it up. It requires no specific temperature to culture, like yogurt does.

You can easily find good quality milk kefir at your local grocery store. But it is really, really simple to make. I promise.

WHY PROBIOTICS?

Everyone knows by now just how important probiotics are to the body. So many things in our modern lifestyles wreak havoc on the living organisms that inhabit a healthy digestive tract, otherwise known as our gut flora.

It is widely known that antibiotics like penicillin and amoxicillin destroy healthy gut flora.

But our modern diet, full of non-organic meats, plenty of processed sugar, and the USDAโ€™s (United States Drug Administration) recommended 11 servings of grains per day, is also responsible for poor gut health.

Since imbalanced gut flora can contribute to degenerative diseases like cancer and also hamper the effectiveness of our immune system, it is vitally important to rebuild a damaged gut.
