A local blogging friend, Julie Blanner, asked me if I could make a slipcover for the IKEA HENRIKSDAL bar stool. She bought three for her new kitchen renovation and wanted covers that fit in with her style. All the slipcovers on the market just didn’t have the charm and tailored feel she was hoping for.

I have never sewn a parsons chair slipcover before, but I knew I was up for the challenge. After all, it couldn’t be any harder than a wingback chair slipcover!

She chose this soft blue ticking stripe from Magnolia Home Fashions. There is a very similar fabric option available on Amazon. You can find that HERE.

I loved the fabric as soon as I saw it. I knew it would make an amazing slipcover for the IKEA HENRIKSDAL bar stool. The ticking stripe transforms the basic bar stools into gorgeous chairs with farmhouse style.

How to sew a parsons chair slipcover

The video tutorial above includes all the instructions you need to make a chair slipcover for yourself. I will also do a brief overview here in the blog post.

You can use these instructions to sew a slipcover for any size chair. The measurements for the cut list above are specific to the IKEA HENRIKSDAL bar stool, but the same directions can be applied to any parsons style chair, dining room chair or barstool. Just adjust the measurements according to your specific piece.

You will see how the slipcover process plays out and apply it to your own piece.

I started by cutting out all the pattern pieces from the cut list above.

The seat on this specific chair angles in, so I needed to adjust for that.

Piecing it together

I started by draping the top piece over the top of the chair, with the right side facing down. I checked to make sure it was pulled evenly all around and that the stripes were straight.

Next, I pinned in the side pieces.

After sewing the side pieces on, I attached the seat piece, making sure to line up all the stripes.

The final step was to attach the bottom panel and pleats.

Watch the video above to learn how to make pleats

I hope you found this tutorial on how to sew a parsons chair slipcover helpful. I enjoyed the process, and love the way they turned out.
