Making your own granola at home is easy and versatile

While I love to add in all the mix ins – dried fruit, nuts, coconut – you can also use this step-by-step to make plain granola, too.

We like to enjoy this granola with raw milk yogurt in a yogurt parfait or even in a smoothie bowl, preferably a kefir smoothie

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Delicious and healthy – We eat granola regularly in this house. It’s easy to make, full of whole food ingredients, and great for a quick snack. Enjoy it in a bowl of yogurt and fresh fruit for breakfast or even to top a couple scoops of raw milk ice cream for dessert.
  • Quick and easy to make ahead – I usually make this granola when the kids are at church doing their Wednesday night activities. This granola recipe is super quick to whip up. I double the recipe so I have it on hand to serve during the week.
  • Make it your own – The best part about any granola recipe is that you can add your favorite mix-ins. Sunflower seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, peanut butter, dried fruits, nuts, mini chocolate chips can all make this granola even tastier.

Homemade Granola Ingredients

Homemade granola ingredients.

Honey  – Preferably local honey. We were able to find some at the farmer’s market. You can also use real maple syrup if you prefer. I like to use a liquid sweetener because it helps the granola clump together more.

Chopped Nuts –  I like to use pecans and walnuts for this recipe. Not only do they add that nutty flavor, but it also adds a crunch. Any nut you like would work. Macadamia nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc. would all be good! I use my food processor to chop them up.

Coconut Chips – This adds another boost of flavor to the granola and gives it another layer of texture. You could also use shredded unsweetened coconut.

Oats – I used organic rolled oats, not the quick oats.

Dried Fruit – I use ¼ cup each blueberries, cherries, golden raisins, and apricots Make sure your dried fruit does not have any added sugar.

How To Make Homemade Granola

Oats, honey, coconut chips, and nuts in a large bowl.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 F degrees.

Add oats, chopped nuts (or whole if you prefer), coconut chips, honey, salt, and melted coconut oil to a large bowl.

A large bowl of homemade granola mixed up and ready to bake.

Step 2: Mix everything so that all the dry ingredients are evenly coated with the melted coconut oil.

Homemade granola spread out on a baking sheet prior to being baked.

Step 3: Spread the oat mixture in an even layer in a 9” by 13” glass pan. You could also use a baking sheet. Line with parchment paper for easier clean up.

Granola in a mason jar tipped over and pouring out.

Step 4: Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. The oatmeal should be a beautiful golden brown.

Add in the dried fruit while the granola is still warm.

Tips

  • To get a crispy granola that mirrors that store-bought granola crunch, you want to make sure you add the right ratio of oil. Keep this in mind if you half or double the recipe.
  • You can change up the flavor of this oatmeal based on the season. Add in some pumpkin spice or apple pie seasoning for fall, cinnamon and vanilla extract for winter, or even cocoa powder for a chocolate treat.
  • Don’t leave out the salt. The addition of good quality sea salt helps bring out all the flavors and sweetness of the granola.

Recipe FAQ’s

Is eating homemade granola healthy?

This homemade granola uses all whole ingredients that include vitamins and minerals. You also get the benefit of healthy fats with the coconut oil and nuts. As with anything that includes sugar, though, it’s important to eat granola in moderation.

What ingredient makes granola stick together?

Fats and liquid are the most common binding agents for granola. In this recipe, the coconut oil and honey help it clump together. The oil also makes it nice and crispy! If you want more clumpy granola, you can also add egg whites.

How do I store homemade granola?

I like to store my homemade rustic granola recipe in a glass container on the counter. Any airtight container will do. This granola is good for up to two weeks, but if your family is anything like mine it will be gone within one week!

Hey Lisa!! Love the granola! Thank you! I told my husband and brother at separate times today that I made some rustic granola and they both reacted exactly the same…”wait, you made this?”
    “Yes.”
    “…You didnt just buy it?”
    “No!!”
They were so impressed!!! Hehe it felt so good! all thanks to you and your God-given gifts. You’ve really been inspiring me lately in all areas of the home and I thank you. God bless you and your family.

Was so looking forward to this recipe but it was disappointing! I made it exactly as written but mine turned out SO greasy. I should have trusted my gut instinct that the mixture looked too wet before I put it in the oven. I think the oil needs to be cut in half but I hate to say I won’t be trying this recipe again to find out.

  3. Wendy says:

Lisa has cracked the secret code on granola! I have tried to make granola in the past, with terrible luck. This granola is easy, delicious and addicting! It’s good enough to share with friends.
I was hesitant to put coconut in it, as I haven’t enjoyed coconut in store bought granola, but then I made Lisa’s toasted coconut recipe and I’m hooked! Feeling rustic, satisfied and successful!

  4. Lauren says:

The taste was great! Seemed like it did have alot of oil. I added milk while hot and my daughter didnt finish eating. A few mins later her stainless steel bowl was coated in coconut oil.

  5. Leah says:

Just made this yesterday. So simple to make and we all love it, the fussy kids included.

  6. Lisa says:

Hi Lisa, we really enjoyed the taste of the granola. Can you please tell me your recommendation on what to do with the soggy texture. Thank you

  7. Lisa says:

It was somewhat crispy once it cooled. But once I put it in the glass container I went to eat some later and it wasn’t crispy. It almost seemed a little greasy. And texture was like it was left out in humidity. I live in Arizona so no humidity… lol Should I put less coconut oil next time? Please let me know your recommendations. Thank you

    1. Lisa says:

Sorry for all of the replies. The previous ones didn’t show up at first.

      1. Kristel says:

Try watching the video Lisa posted. The humidity May be of too much oil or not enough time in the oven. Also store them in a hermetic glass container

  8. Lisa says:

Hi Lisa, this granola tastes wonderful. I just made it and it’s still warm. Will it get crunchy as it cools? Should I use less coconut oil next time? I’m so glad I found your blog. It’s fun! Thank you 😃

    1. Lisa says:

Yep! It will get crunchy as it cool!

      1. Lisa says:

Hi, well, it did get crunchy, somewhat, but then I put it in a container and it’s no longer very crunchy. Could there be too much oil? I followed the directions. It’s like it’s been out in humidity but I live in Arizona…. I like the flavor just would like the crunchy consistency. Thanks

      2. Lisa says:

Hi Lisa, so it did get a crunch but one it was in the jar it lost the crunch. Should I use less coconut oil? I baked it on a cookie sheet with a sil pad. Could that be it? I would think that would make it crispier. It’s like it’s been out in humidity. But I live in Arizona…. you know the saying… it’s a dry heat lol. Any suggestions? Thanks

  9. Ashleigh Topham says:

Thanks so much Lisa! Just made this and even the husband loves it ( a tad sweet for me) I’ll do a double next time and adjust to personal preferences. Delish!
