Crunchy, delicious, homemade gluten free croutons are a tasty way to top a salad. Making your own croutons is super easy and is a great way to use up old or stale bread.
Back when I was recipe testing this sourdough gluten free bread, I had to make many many loaves. And you can really only eat so many, so I wanted to come up with creative ways to use the leftover bread. Homemade gluten-free croutons are the answer. Stuffing is another amazing way FYI.
This easy recipe comes together in just a few minutes and it really takes boring old salads up a notch.
Best part is it can help reduce food waste because you can use a loaf of failed bread (we’ve all been there right?) or stale bread.
They are super delicious, and my kids wouldn’t stop just picking them off the tray to eat.
Why you will love this recipe:
Easy: Just dice up a loaf of bread, top it with a little oil and seasonings, and bake.
Good way to use up leftovers: This recipe works exceptionally well with stale, leftover bread.
Tasty addition to any salad: Topping your favorite salad with these crunchy additions will make it better.
Delicious: Move over grocery store croutons, this gluten-free crouton recipe is way more delicious.
Cheaper: Gluten free store-bought croutons are not cheap and this recipe can be a less expensive way to make them.
Tips For Making Gluten Free Homemade Croutons:
- You can use any kind of bread. Homemade or store-bought bread will work for this recipe. Stale and fresh bread will also work.
- For this recipe, I love the flavor olive oil adds. You could also substitute with melted butter or avocado oil. I wouldnโt recommend any other highly processed oil like vegetable, corn, or canola, etc. These bland oils are also highly inflammatory.

Tools you may need:
Measuring spoons
Parchment paper
Knife
Cutting board
Simple Ingredients:
Gluten-free bread: Homemade or store-bought will work.
Olive oil: Could also substitute with melted butter.
Italian seasoning or Herbs de Provence: Italian seasonings usually contain oregano, thyme, basil, rosemary, and marjoram. Herbs de Provence is more challenging to find. If you don’t have these two blends, you can also use your own mix of onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, basil, oregano, etc.
Salt: My favorite is unrefined sea salt.
How To Make Homemade Gluten Free Croutons
Make homemade gluten free bread first if desired. You can also use store-bought bread.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Line a sheet pan with parchment paper.
Place bread on a cutting board and cut into 3/4 inch cubes with a knife.
Lay onto the baking sheet or into a large bowl. I like to just do it right on the baking sheet to make one less dish to clean.
Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and spices.
Mix well to combine and evenly coat the bread cubes with oil and seasonings. I like to do this with my hands. It’s the most efficient in my opinion.
Spread evenly on the parchment lined baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake for 15-20 minutes. The edges should start to turn a little golden brown.
Allow to cool completely and then enjoy. You can top with fresh herbs.
How to use croutons:
