If you watched my last video, or saw the blog post, than you may know that I pulled my favorite cable-knit sweater from storage this year after being pregnant.

I was so excited to be able to wear it again only to discover that a moth or a mouse or something had eaten a hole in the front of the sweater.

It was my favorite sweater, and before calling it a total loss, I decided to re-purpose it and make a few projects. You can see how I turned it into an adorable sweater pillow with piping and grain sack fabric.

Today, I’m going to show you how to make these very simple DIY ornaments for Christmas that look so good on my natural, neutral, farmhouse Christmas tree.

Tips For Making DIY Ornaments For Christmas

  • Make these from an old or thrifted sweater, or you could just use grain sack or another pretty fabric you have on hand.
  • These would not only make beautiful tree ornaments, but also would be beautiful to add to a DIY Holiday Gift Basket.
  • Use bells, tiny ornaments, or other beautiful greenery or embellishments to make these ornaments festive. They can easily be transformed to match any decor or style.

Materials you will need:

3 inch embroidery hoops

Old sweater

Neutral fabric – you only need a little bit. I used some leftover grain-sack fabric I had on hand.

Ribbon

Embellishments – I used faux greenery and some bells.

Scissors

Hot glue- totally optional. I didn’t use it, but you may need to to make it more secure.

How To Make DIY Ornaments For Christmas

  1. Laying the sweater down, cut a 5 inch by 5 inch piece of the sweater. I made sure it was on a pretty part of the sweater that laid nicely.
  2. Then cut another 5 inch by 5 inch piece of scrap grain-sack fabric or some drop cloth.
  3. Lay the inside of the embroidery hoop down and place the grain-sack fabric down, then place the sweater piece on top.
  4. Unscrewing the outside part of the embroidery hoop as much as possible, place the outside ring on top of the sweater piece, fabric, and interior hoop and press down.
  5. Tighten the screw to make sure it is secure.
  6. Add your embellishments.
  7. Next, take some ribbon and tie a loop around the metal screw to act as a loop to hang the ornament on the tree.
  8. Cut other piece of ribbon and thread a bell or ornament through it.
  9. Add a piece of greenery through the bell loop as well and pull the ribbon through the top of the embroidery hoop and tie a knot in it. You could secure the greenery with a little bit of hot glue if you would like.

That is all there is to it. It is so easy to make.

A few weeks back when I was decorating my farmhouse Christmas tree, I made some of these DIY ornaments for Christmas with just grain-sack fabric and they turned out so pretty.

It’s nice to have a couple sets: three of the grain-sack and three of the sweater ones. It adds so much charm and texture.

Just super pretty on our neutral tree.
