I never notice a need for moisturizer throughout the rest of the year. In the winter, when the wood stove is burning, and I’m taking long hot baths, my skin gets so dry. This body butter goes on smooth and is so nourishing for the skin.

Anything that you put on your skin can absorb right into your body. That is why I love making my own homemade products. All the ingredients are pure enough to eat. We really shouldn’t put anything on our bodies that we wouldn’t put in our mouths.

For this recipe you only need one part each of four basic ingredients: shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and olive oil. I also add in essential oils for scent and their amazing health properties.

Cocoa butter has the most delicious chocolate smell. It pairs well with lavender essential oil or wild orange. The smell is amazing!

A note on the ingredients

When I first started making my own personal care and household products, I worried I would never use up all the ingredients. Now I know the same basic ingredients can be used to make so many things!

You can modify this recipe just slightly to make homemade diaper cream and sunscreen. Just add non-nano zinc oxide.

Beeswax can be used to make hand poured candles and DIY lip balm. Get another variation of my DIY All Natural Lavender Cocoa Sunscreen HERE.

I also use cocoa butter to make Homemade Superfood Chocolate.

If you invest in these basic ingredients, they will be put to good use!

Ingredients & Tools

  • Coconut oil – is moisturizing, can help promote wound healing, and has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. (source)
  • Olive oil – is very moisturizing, promotes wound healing while also having anti-inflammatory properties. Olive oil can also have anti-aging properties. (source)
  • Cocoa butter (this is what I use) – can help keep in moisture by giving skin a protective barrier.
  • Shea butter (this is what I use) – is rich in antioxidants, highly moisturizing, and promotes skin healing.
  • Essential oil (optional)

How To Make Whipped Body Butter

1. Melt the coconut oil, olive oil, cocoa butter, and shea butter in a double boiler over low to medium heat. I just use a glass bowl over a pot of boiling water.

2. Put the mixture in the freezer until it is firm. You don’t want it to be completely hard. Just firm enough that when you push your finger into it, the mold stays. (See video)

3. Add in your favorite essential oil.

4. Whip the butter using a stand mixer or handheld mixer until it is light and fluffy. This will take 5-10 minutes.

5. Store in a glass mason jar with a lid. I like to use a wide mouth half-pint mason jar, so I can get the lotion out easily.

  1. CT says:

    Hi,

I just tried using this recipe for the first time and was left with any extremely oily lotion. Is there something I do to fix the oiliness of it? I don’t want to have to throw it away.

    1. Lisa Bass says:

You can add more coconut butter and shea butter to cut down on the oiliness.

  2. Maggie says:

Hi! I just made this body butter and used essential oil, but I’m having a really hard time getting the scent of the EO… the cocoa butter is overpowering it all! I’ve tried adding extra drops but it still isn’t working. Any ideas?

    1. Lisa Bass says:

Essential oil is more subtle than a fragrance oil. I would try letting it sit over night to see if that helps some of the scent incorporate. If that doesn’t work, I would continue to add more essential oil drops! It won’t hurt the body butter.

  3. Anonymous says:

Can this be used on babies?

    1. Lisa Bass says:

      Yes.

  4. Tricia Murphy says:

I’m new to all this, but don’t you need to add a preservative or anti-microbial? I’m still going to try this, but I think to be on the safe side I’m going to add a tiny bit of anti-microbial something or other. Haven’t quite decided what. Any suggestions?

    1. Lisa Bass says:

Since there isn’t any water and it is just oils you don’t really need anything extra.

  5. Lin S says:

I’ve returned to this recipe after a number of experiments with other butters, oils and formulations. Honestly, my skin loves this recipe, and I like the fact I have all the ingredients on hand throughout the year. I don’t have to buy and store specialized ingredients, so there’s little waste. My budget and very small pantry like that a lot.

  6. Tabitha Brown says:

I made something very close to this before and it was extremely oily with using 1/2cup of olive oil, I had to throw it away. It was the olive oil separated.

    1. Lisa Bass says:

This one doesn’t separate like that.

  7. Amber Caldwell says:

Do you have a sour dough cook book I can purchase ?

    1. Lisa Bass says:

Not yet! It’s in the making.

  8. Cheryl says:

I made this with cocoa butter and without for a pregnant friend who couldnโ€™t take the cocoa butter smell. I just doubled the shea butter. This is such a great butter. I love it

  9. Kevin T says:

I doubled the recipe, now I noticed that there wasn’t a specific notated amount of time for it to harden in the freezer.. should I go ahead and predict the doubled recipe should take longer? And if so may you have a guesstimated amount of time?

    1. Lisa says:

The freeze time can vary. A few hours would be my guess on a double batch!

  10. Cindy says:

I use jojoba oil and cocoa butter and shea butter.
It whips up beautifully but then turns hard fairly quickly.
I still use it but would like it to stay whipped. Any suggestions?

    1. Lisa says:

The shea butter and cocoa butter should help to keep it from hardening that quickly. I would try adding more shea butter to the recipe and see how that works.
