While this recipe may be slightly out of the norm for me, the kids came home with a ton of foraged pawpaw fruit and I needed to figure out what to do with them.

Pawpaws are actually native to a good portion of North America and can be foraged during the fall months.

What once was a very popular fruit since it tastes like a tropical fruit, has since become less popular due to its short shelf life and special growing requirements.

So you have to enjoy the fresh fruit when it is available, or freeze the flesh for later

While you won’t find these in the grocery stores, they are really fun to forage.

One of the most delicious fruits, you will easily fall in love with pawpaws.

Why you will love this recipe:

Delicious: Since pawpaws encompass tropical flavors, this recipe tastes like a yummy tropical smoothie.

Healthy drink: Pawpaws are actually a very nutritious fruit that is packed full of vitamins and minerals and have tons of health benefits. They are high in vitamin c, Iron, manganese, magnesium, and copper. They are also a good source of many other nutrients and essential amino acids. (source)

Easy: Smoothies are my favorite easy and healthy breakfast. They come together so fast, and no one complains.

Tips:

  • Don’t eat the seeds or skins of the pawpaw as they contain toxins.
  • Turn this into a green smoothie by adding a handful of frozen spinach or kale.
  • I love smoothies because they are so customizable. Add whatever you want.
  • Buy bananas when they are on sale and then freeze without the skin. Frozen bananas are great to have on hand to throw into smoothies.

Ingredients:

Pawpaws: This yummy fruit is ripe in the fall and is found in many places in North America. With its creamy consistency, it is no wonder our founding fathers were a big fan.
Banana: I love using really ripe bananas. The riper the banana the more natural sweetness there is.
Milk:
I usually use whole milk since we have a dairy cow and love the creamier texture, but you can choose whatever liquid milk you would like. To make this into a vegan smoothie, use almond, cashew, hazelnut, or coconut milk.
Ice cubes
Honey
: Or substitute for maple syrup

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Protein powder: I love adding collagen peptides to smoothies because it adds a boost of protein without changing the flavor.
  • Nuts and seeds: Hemp seeds, chia seeds, or flax seeds are great to add to smoothies. Boost of omega 3s and fiber. You could even add a scoop of nut butter.
  • Cauliflower: Swap out some of the ice for frozen cauliflower. Sounds weird, but you really can’t taste it and it adds a boost of veggies.
  • Greens: Add in a handful of kale or spinach.
  • Greek yogurt: For another boost of protein, you can add a scoop of greek yogurt.
  • Turmeric powder: Add a little boost of phytonutrients and make this smoothie even healthier.

    Very delicious creamy drink

  2. Elizabeth says:

We live in PA and have pawpaws that my grandmother brought up from West Virginia, where she lived as a little girl. People are always calling us to see if they can come and pick some pawpaws at our house! We tell them that they can – but ONLY if they sing the song while they do!

Makes great pawpaw butter. We have even mixed the pawpaws with milk and bananas to make a very nice ice cream.
