This homemade sourdough garlic bread recipe will be your favorite accompaniment for so many dishes! Crusty, sourdough French bread loaded with a garlic herb butter, topped with cheese, and baked until bubbly.ย
You know when you just need that perfect โback pocketโ recipe that will always, and I mean always, compliment dinner and be a huge crowd favorite?
Well, this sourdough garlic bread is the ticket.
Weโre talking sourdough bread that has been long fermented to develop all that amazing tangy goodness, then slathered with a garlic herb butter and topped with cheese. Itโs toasted until perfection โ where all the little edges and the parmesan cheese start to turn golden and crisp.
Packed full of yummy garlic goodness, it pairs well with salad, soup, roasted chicken, your familyโs favorite pasta dish, pork chopsโฆ you name it.
You can mix it up a bit by trying different herbs. Now that the weather is warming up, the garden is starting to come alive. Parsley, basil, oregano, and rosemary are just about ready to be picked.
Like I always say, there is nothing better than crusty sourdough bread slathered with butter – but Iโve changed my mind. Garlic butter is better. Your tastebuds will be happy.
Why you will love this recipe:
The perfect side dish: Homemade garlic bread is one of my favorite sides. It goes perfectly with soup, salad, stews, pork chops, Italian dishes, just about anything.
Great for garlic lovers: It’s probably one of my favorite foods. It adds so much flavor to dishes. You can even try making fermented garlic.
Simple ingredients: Have you seen some of the ingredients in the store-bought garlic bread? Not my favorite. Making a homemade version is so, so easy, and you get to control the quality of the ingredients.
Sourdough Garlic Bread Tips:
- While I make almost everything from scratch, I realize not everyone can or wants to. So if you donโt make your own bread or are just pinched for time, you can substitute the homemade French bread for a loaf from the grocery store, and youโll get similar results. You can learn to make your own sourdough starter and bread here.
- Try other combinations of herbs like fresh rosemary or fresh parsley.
- If you donโt have fresh herbs on hand, substitute them for dried.
- One of my favorite essential kitchen tools is a garlic press. Instead of painstakingly dicing up cloves of garlic, this handy gadget minces them in just a few seconds.
- I love using my ownย homemade butterย orย compound butter.
Ingredients
Sourdough French bread: There is nothing like homemade sourdough bread. The long fermentation adds so much flavor that all other breads just tasteโฆ wellโฆ a little bland. I highly recommend making the bread from scratch, but if you donโt have time, you can purchase a quality, crusty, sourdough loaf from the store.
Butter: I use unsalted butter and add salt later. If you have salted butter on hand, you may want to skip adding extra salt.
Olive oil: This helps give a better consistency and makes the butter more spreadable. Choose a high quality olive oil.
Salt: Choose a high quality sea salt. It is worth it and tastes much better than refined salt.
Fresh garlic cloves: Now Iโm not going to lie, I LOVE garlic and add it to just about every savory dish. If you only like a hint of garlic, you may only add 2-3 cloves of garlic. You can also use garlic powder if you must. My mom made it with garlic powder growing up, and it gives a much milder flavor, though still tasty. Use fresh garlic for the best flavor.
Parsley: This just adds a deliciously fresh taste to this recipe. Other fresh herbs like oregano, rosemary, or thyme would also work. Dried herbs also work.
Fresh parmesan cheese: You know what takes garlic bread up a few notches? Cheese! Sprinkling freshly grated parmesan adds a yummy cheesy flavor and that melty goodness. You could also use mozzarella cheese.

Sourdough bread is healthier compared to regular bread for a few reasons. One, the fermentation process breaks down the phytic acid in the grains that reduces the absorption of the nutrients in the grain. Also, the fermentation also breaks down the gluten, making it easier to digest.

I made this ahead of time and froze the bread to use when it was needed. Came out of the toaster oven very well. Will be making this again in the future.
