Last time I was in town, I picked up some flannel because I wanted to make a few more cozy blankets.
These blankets speak comfort. Every chair, every couch, and every bed in our home has a comfy, cozy blanket to snuggle up with.
It really just brings warmth to any space.
I just sewed a blanket the same way I sewed these linen ruffle throws. To bring up the cozy factor, I switched out linen for warm flannel on both sides.
We have this antique chair in our front entryway that we really just use as a place to toss things on. More often than not, you will find coveralls, mail, and other random things thrown on that poor chair.
I wanted this space to have a purpose, not just a cluttered catch-all. It’s the perfect little sitting area, right next to the wood burning stove, so it doesn’t really get any cozier than that. The potential was just shouting at me.
Tips For Making A Flannel Blanket
- Prewashing and drying the fabric before sewing helps preshrink the fabric, so it won’t shrink weirdly after it has been sewn.
- You can use coordinating fabric or the same fabric, depending on the look you are going for.

What can I make with flannel fabric?

2 yards of a flannel fabric
2.5 yards of a coordinating flannel fabric

How To Make A DIY Flannel Blanket With A Ruffle
Cut out the ruffle pieces:
Cut 1/2 yard from the longer piece. Divide it into 4 equal strips. Sew two strips together at one short end. Repeat with the other two short strips. You will now have two strips 2X as long as the width of the main blanket pieces.
Make the ruffles
- Take one of the long strips, fold both short edges over 1/4″, and press in place. (This will be hidden inside the ruffle piece when you fold it in half in the next step.)
- Fold the long strip in half lengthwise. Put a gathering stitch in the unfinished edge (non folded edge) of the long ruffle piece. I like to start a new gathering stitch every 18-20″ so that I don’t risk breaking the whole thing when I go to actually gather it.
- Pull the gathering string to create a ruffle. Gather until the ruffle piece matches the width of the main blanket piece.
- Repeat with the other long strip, to make the ruffle for the other side of the blanket.
Attach The Ruffles To The Blanket
- Place one of the main blanket pieces on the floor or a table, right side up.
- Add the two ruffle pieces to the two short ends, with the raw edges lined up. At this point, you can either pin the ruffles in place and catch them while sewing the blanket together, or sew them in place. I chose to sew mine.
- Add the other main blanket piece, wrong side up. Now you will have the two ruffle pieces sandwiched between the two main blanket pieces.
- Sew all the way around the blanket, leaving one 6″ spot open to pull the blanket right side out.
- Pull the blanket right side out, and close the opening with a narrow topstitch.
