In my Simple Sewing Series, I went through all the basics of sewing, to take you from a person who has never sewn, to someone who can make all kinds of basic things around the house. Now trust me, if you know the simple sewing skills, you truly can make all kinds of things. Today, I want to share 10 easy beginner sewing tutorials that you should be able to make now!

Aprons
Aprons are one of the first things I learned to make when I first started sewing. Aprons are super simple to make. You can add little pockets, or a ruffle, to the bottom of the apron. You can also make a cross back version, like my pinafore style apron. All aprons require are some seams and hems.
Aprons make really great gifts around Christmas time, so you can make just a basic apron and sew them for every lady on your list!
I have tutorials for a Women’s Pinafore Apron, with or without a ruffle, and a Girls Pinafore Apron with the optional ruffle. Both of these aprons have a criss-cross style back.
Aprons are great, because they do not have to fit perfectly, like a dress does. An apron is pretty much one size fits all, which makes them perfect for beginners!
Throw Blankets
Now believe it or not, a throw blanket is basically just two pieces of fabric sewn together, sewn around the outside, turned inside out, and completed with a top stitch.
I have a tutorial for a Linen and Flannel Ruffle Throw Blanket. This tutorial is one of my most popular sewing tutorials, and my favorite blanket in my home. All you need to know how to make a blanket is how to make a ruffle and how to make a seam. Now it you want, you can leave out the ruffle to make the blanket even more basic. There are a ton of variations you can make to the blanket.
Pillow Covers
On the blog, I have a tutorial for the most Basic Pillow Cover that was part of the Simple Sewing Series. All you need are a couple hems and seams.
I also have a tutorial for a Grain Sack and Ticking Stripe Pillow Cover Set. The inside pillow cover is the exact same pattern as the basic pillow cover, but the outside is just two fabric pieces sewn together with an opening and two ties. I promise you the outside pillow cover is just as easy as the inside pillow cover!
Skirt
When you are first starting sewing, skirts are the easiest project to make. Seriously, just two pieces of fabric sewn together at the side seams, an elastic waistband, and a hem at the bottom. Even for a beginner, a skirt takes less than thirty minutes to put together. I have a tutorial called How to Sew a Skirt where I walk you through each step.
There are many variations to a skirt. You can add a ruffle to the bottom, or add a different color fabric for the waistband. Oh, so many options!
Skirts are super basic and you can whip one up for your daughter tonight.
Basket Liner
You might have a few baskets around your house that maybe could use a liner to look a little prettier. Basket liners are super simple to make and I have an easy to follow tutorial about How to Make a Basket Liner here on the blog with a ruffle and a bow. You can omit the ruffle and the bow to make it even easier to sew.
Sewing a basic liner is really not as hard as it sounds.
Peasant Dresses
Peasant Dresses are the easiest dress to make for girls. They have a lot of elastic on them, so they are very forgiving in the sizing. Nothing about peasant dresses are complicated. You don’t even have to add a ruffle at the bottom of the dress, if you don’t want to. Personally, I love ruffles, so I add them to just about everything I can. However, if gathers scare you, then you can totally omit the ruffle.
Because the peasant dress has elastic, it can fit for years. When I make them without the center waistband, my daughters can wear them for a while as dresses and later as a shirt.
You can seriously whip about 10 of these in a day, once you get rolling. There are a lot of whimsical combinations you can make for a dress, by using different fabrics to mix and match. I like to put one fabric in the band, another for the ruffle and something coordinating for the sleeves and skirt.
I used to have so much fun doing this when my girls were small. Then, I went and had three boys in a row! I love my boys, but I must admit they aren’t nearly as fun to sew for.

Curtains
Whether you are just doing a rod pocket at the top, a tab top, or a tie top, curtains are so easy to make. I actually have tutorials for all three of those styles on here. All you have to do is measure how long you want your curtains and know the basic sewing skills. Curtains are also very inexpensive to make, and can be easily customized for your home. In our mudroom, I dyed drop cloth to make curtains in the navy blue color I wanted.
Swaddle Blankets
If you have a baby shower coming up, or if you’re pregnant, swaddle blankets are the easiest handmade git to make. Simply cut out a rectangle piece of gauze fabric and sew a hem all the way around. I have a How to Make Muslin Swaddle Blankets tutorial here on the blog.
For me, swaddle blankets are a must in my minimalist baby essentials list.
Duvet Cover
Believe it or not, a duvet cover is super easy to make. I have a Duvet Cover Sewing Tutorial that I made for my girls room. In the tutorial I used ruffles and a few different panels of fabric. You could make the project even more basic, you can just put together two sheets, sew around the sides, turn it right side out, and then add ties or buttons at the top.
You can use any color fabric and any type of fabric. What I really like is that you can customize it to make it the color of the room. I made some bunting with the same fabric, and some pillow covers to match as well.
Projects from Tea Towels
Making projects out of tea towels is the easiest thing of all. Two of the projects I have on the blog are Super Simple DIY Pillows from IKEA Tea Towels and a Harvest Apron from IKEA Tea Towels. You literally fold the towel in half, sew around the outside, and add ties. It really is that fast.
If you’re roaming around the kitchen section at Target and find yourself saying, “This is way too cute to be a tea towel,” snag ’em up and make a few pillows and aprons for your home!

I always enjoy seeing sewing tutorials. Sewing is becoming a lost art! I am old enough to have had the opportunity to take Home Ec all 4 years of high school. I also took pattern making in college. When my kids were little I made most of their basics–even t-shirts. Christmas pictures of my 3 girls in matching robes still make me smile. I made coveralls for my boys, bedspreads, window valances, and on and on. I don’t sew clothes very often any more but my sewing skills come in handy when I want to tailor something I purchased. My last sewing project was to make sofa pillows out of a curtain panel. I wanted pillows to match the print chairs I bought when I re-decorated my living room and the only way to get them was to make them. The fabric was very light so I had to iron on interfacing on the back of the fabric but that was quick and easy and it took very little time and effort to get the look I wanted.
