Making your own granola at home is easy and versatile

While I love to add in all the mix ins – dried fruit, nuts, coconut – you can also use this step-by-step to make plain granola, too.

We like to enjoy this granola with raw milk yogurt in a yogurt parfait or even in a smoothie bowl, preferably a kefir smoothie

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Delicious and healthy – We eat granola regularly in this house. It’s easy to make, full of whole food ingredients, and great for a quick snack. Enjoy it in a bowl of yogurt and fresh fruit for breakfast or even to top a couple scoops of raw milk ice cream for dessert.
  • Quick and easy to make ahead – I usually make this granola when the kids are at church doing their Wednesday night activities. This granola recipe is super quick to whip up. I double the recipe so I have it on hand to serve during the week.
  • Make it your own – The best part about any granola recipe is that you can add your favorite mix-ins. Sunflower seeds, flax seeds, chia seeds, peanut butter, dried fruits, nuts, mini chocolate chips can all make this granola even tastier.

Homemade Granola Ingredients

Homemade granola ingredients.

Honey  – Preferably local honey. We were able to find some at the farmer’s market. You can also use real maple syrup if you prefer. I like to use a liquid sweetener because it helps the granola clump together more.

Chopped Nuts –  I like to use pecans and walnuts for this recipe. Not only do they add that nutty flavor, but it also adds a crunch. Any nut you like would work. Macadamia nuts, almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc. would all be good! I use my food processor to chop them up.

Coconut Chips – This adds another boost of flavor to the granola and gives it another layer of texture. You could also use shredded unsweetened coconut.

Oats – I used organic rolled oats, not the quick oats.

Dried Fruit – I use ¼ cup each blueberries, cherries, golden raisins, and apricots Make sure your dried fruit does not have any added sugar.

How To Make Homemade Granola

Oats, honey, coconut chips, and nuts in a large bowl.

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 F degrees.

Add oats, chopped nuts (or whole if you prefer), coconut chips, honey, salt, and melted coconut oil to a large bowl.

A large bowl of homemade granola mixed up and ready to bake.

Step 2: Mix everything so that all the dry ingredients are evenly coated with the melted coconut oil.

Homemade granola spread out on a baking sheet prior to being baked.

Step 3: Spread the oat mixture in an even layer in a 9” by 13” glass pan. You could also use a baking sheet. Line with parchment paper for easier clean up.

Granola in a mason jar tipped over and pouring out.

Step 4: Bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through. The oatmeal should be a beautiful golden brown.

Add in the dried fruit while the granola is still warm.

Tips

  • To get a crispy granola that mirrors that store-bought granola crunch, you want to make sure you add the right ratio of oil. Keep this in mind if you half or double the recipe.
  • You can change up the flavor of this oatmeal based on the season. Add in some pumpkin spice or apple pie seasoning for fall, cinnamon and vanilla extract for winter, or even cocoa powder for a chocolate treat.
  • Don’t leave out the salt. The addition of good quality sea salt helps bring out all the flavors and sweetness of the granola.

Recipe FAQ’s

Is eating homemade granola healthy?

This homemade granola uses all whole ingredients that include vitamins and minerals. You also get the benefit of healthy fats with the coconut oil and nuts. As with anything that includes sugar, though, it’s important to eat granola in moderation.

What ingredient makes granola stick together?

Fats and liquid are the most common binding agents for granola. In this recipe, the coconut oil and honey help it clump together. The oil also makes it nice and crispy! If you want more clumpy granola, you can also add egg whites.

How do I store homemade granola?

I like to store my homemade rustic granola recipe in a glass container on the counter. Any airtight container will do. This granola is good for up to two weeks, but if your family is anything like mine it will be gone within one week!

Are the nutritional facts based on the whole recipe or per serving? If per serving, how much is a serving?

  2. Beth says:

When is the dried fruit added? I think on other recipes they don’t always add it at the beginning of baking due to risk of burning. I added it at the halfway point of baking so I could stir through but it didn’t burn but not entirely clear from the recipe?

    1. Lisa Bass says:

In step 4, you’ll add the dried fruit after the granola has baked!

I just made this and my whole house smells so delicious! I doubled the recipe, used half honey, half maple syrup and added walnuts, unsweetened coconut, flax seeds and meal as well as some chia seeds. Initially it seemed like there was too much coconut oil, but once everything cooked and cooled, it was perfect. I snuck a spoonful before cooking it and even then it was delish! This is a great recipe.

I can never get this crunchy. Trying to figure out if too much oil or honey.

    1. Lisa Bass says:

Try a little less honey or broiling it for a few minutes.

Great recipe! I omitted the dried fruit and cooked it about twice as long to get it crispier.

  7. Emily says:

This is the perfect recipe…I make the base of it all the time and add new fun things into it on occasion! Such a money saver!! The only thing I’ve added over the years (that I learned from Acres Homestead) is to add two eggs (she says egg whites, but I just do two whole eggs) to the mix before baking and it makes the granola form into larger crunchy chunks/clusters. SO good!! Thank you!!

    1. Jenny says:

Adding the eggs turns it into what we call “Amish Oatmeal” which is so good too, just not a granola texture.
